Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery

The Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery

The Salam Centre is run and managed by the Italian based humanitarian organisation EMERGENCY.
Since April 2007, the Centre provides high standard, free of charge paediatric and adult cardiac surgery.

Almost for free?

Twenty-two year old Osman Mohamed’s father, tells us that his son’s breathlessness is the result of a small hole in his ventricle. The appointments that he attended at the hospitals in his province – Northern Province – did not give much cause for hope: given that first the operation cost 8,000 Sudanese pounds (2,600 euros) and 9,000 Sudanese pounds (3,000 euros) for the second operation – these are sums that are completely unaffordable for his family.

After hearing about the Salam Centre, and its highly qualified staff and the fact that it provides completely free treatment, both father and son set off from Shendi to Khartoum. The results of routine tests showed the necessity for a surgical intervention.

On 19th January Osman was admitted and on the 22nd January he finally had his operation. His father was happy and thanked everyone for treating his son "almost for free". "Almost"? Yes, almost, as Osman’s family had to donate almost three and half litres of their blood!.
